The text is generated in your browser from the classic Latin word pool, in sentences of 6 to 14 words with commas and periods, so your mockup reads like real copy. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Lorem ipsum is the placeholder text designers and developers use to see how a page looks before the real copy exists. This lorem ipsum generator gives you exactly the amount you need in seconds: paragraphs, sentences or a precise word count, as plain text or HTML.

How to use this lorem ipsum generator

  1. Pick what you need

Paragraphs for a blog post or landing page, sentences for a product card, and an exact word count when the space is fixed, like an eight-word headline.

  2. Set the amount and the length

Type a number or use the − and + buttons. For paragraphs you can also choose short (2 or 3 sentences), medium (4 to 6) or long (7 to 9).

  3. Choose the opening and the format

Keep the classic “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” opening if you want anyone to spot the filler instantly. Turn on <p> tags if you’re pasting it straight into HTML.

  4. Copy and paste

“Copy text” sends it to your clipboard. The word and character count sits right above the text, in case your design has a limit.

The sentences aren’t a random pile of words. Each one has 6 to 14 words, the odd comma and a period, like real writing, so your mockup breathes the way it will once the final copy arrives.

Where lorem ipsum text comes from

It goes back to Cicero. In 45 BC he wrote “De finibus bonorum et malorum”, a treatise on ethics, and sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 hold the line the filler was cut from: “Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit…”. That “dolorem”, sliced in half, is the “lorem” at the start.

According to Britannica, the text took off in the 1960s on Letraset’s dry-transfer sheets and later moved into desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker. The Latin source was tracked down by Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College, who searched classical texts for the word “consectetur”.

Lorem ipsum full text to copy and paste, with its translation

There is no single full text, because the classic passage is a collage. This is the version that gets pasted everywhere.

There is no meaningful lorem ipsum translation, since the words were cut and shuffled. The sentence by Cicero it comes from does translate. Our own rendering of “Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum…” goes like this. “There is no one who loves, seeks or wants pain itself, just because it is pain. They do it, now and then, because effort and pain bring great pleasure.”

How much dummy text do you need?

Asking for “three paragraphs” every time is the fastest way to build a mockup that lies. Match the filler to the real space:

What you’re designingWhat to ask the generator for
Landing page headline8 words, without the classic opening
Product or service card2 sentences
“About us” page2 or 3 medium paragraphs
Blog post6 to 8 long paragraphs
Social caption or ad copy25 to 40 words

Want to mirror your real copy? Paste it into the word counter and generate the same number of words here.

When filler text hurts your design

Headlines, buttons and calls to action are where filler text lies the most. “Get a free quote” doesn’t take up the same room as “Lorem ipsum”, and a button that breaks onto two lines with the real words means redoing the design. Write the final copy for those pieces from day one, even as a rough draft, and keep the lorem ipsum for long blocks.

Building with AI? Our guide on how to build a website with AI shows you how to ask for real copy for every section in the first draft. And if your headlines arrive in all caps, run them through the case converter before they hit the layout.

Placeholder text alternatives to lorem ipsum that fit real designs

Latin works, but it is not your only option. When a client will review the mockup, placeholder text with meaning saves you questions and shows real problems early. Here are four options.

  • The client’s real copy. Ask for the headline, the service list and two testimonials. The mockup then looks like the final page.
  • An AI draft. Give an AI your services and ask for a first version of each section. You edit it afterward.
  • Public-domain text. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, from 1865, is free to use and already in English. Pick a passage as long as your final copy.
  • Your own paragraph, repeated. Paste one real paragraph three times to see how the page handles more text.

One rule for all of them: never leave any of it live. A line from Alice on a plumber’s site gets noticed too.

Frequently asked questions about lorem ipsum

What does lorem ipsum mean?

On its own, nothing. It’s Latin that was chopped up and scrambled on purpose. “Lorem” is the tail end of “dolorem” (pain), and “dolorem ipsum” means “pain itself”. The words come from a passage by Cicero, but they were cut, reordered and mixed with forms that aren’t real Latin, so there’s no sentence left to translate. That’s exactly why it works: readers look at the shape of the text instead of reading it.

What is lorem ipsum used for?

It fills the space where real copy will go, so designers, developers and clients can judge a layout, a font or a page template without getting stuck on the words. You’ll see it in website mockups, WordPress themes, Figma and Canva templates, brochures and app screens. It’s a stand-in, not content: swap it out before anything goes live, because search engines will index it like any other text.

Is ipsum lorem Latin?

Mostly, but not quite. The words are taken from Cicero’s “De finibus bonorum et malorum”, written in 45 BC, yet the passage was trimmed, shuffled and padded. Some words survive intact, like “dolor” and “magna”, while others were bent out of shape: “adipiscing” isn’t a real Latin form. It looks and sounds like Latin, but any lorem ipsum translation you find online is a loose guess, not a real translation.

How can I convert my text to lorem ipsum?

You can’t translate text into lorem ipsum, but you can match its length, which is what matters for a layout. Count the words in your real paragraph, choose “Words” in the generator above, type that number and copy the result. Because the filler is built from sentences with commas and periods, it wraps and breaks across lines much like real copy of the same length would.
