Engagement Rate Calculator for Instagram and TikTok (by Followers and Reach)

This engagement rate calculator gives you your Instagram or TikTok rate by followers and by reach, shows both formulas and compares you with your industry median.

By reach

Everything is calculated in your browser: nothing is saved or sent.

Engagement rate is the share of your audience that interacts with what you post. This tool calculates it the two ways brands and agencies use, so you can compare accounts, formats and campaigns on equal terms.

How to calculate engagement rate with the calculator

  1. Pick the platform

Instagram or TikTok. On TikTok, the second rate uses views instead of reach, because that’s the number the app gives you.

  2. Copy the post’s interactions

Likes, comments, shares and saves, from the post’s insights. On Instagram only you can see saves, so leave that field empty when you compare with someone else’s account.

  3. Add followers and reach

If you add up several posts, enter how many under “Number of posts” and you’ll get the average per post.

  4. Compare with your industry and copy

Pick your industry to see how many times above or below its median you are. “Copy result” gives you a line ready for a report.

That’s why it works as an Instagram engagement rate calculator and a TikTok engagement rate calculator in one.

The engagement rate formula: by followers vs by reach

There are two ways to calculate it and both are valid. What doesn’t work is mixing them when you compare.

RateFormulaUse it to
By followers(interactions ÷ posts) ÷ followers × 100Compare accounts, including other people’s
By reach or viewsinteractions ÷ reach × 100See if the people you reach like what they see

With the calculator’s sample data (500 interactions, 12,000 followers and 5,200 accounts reached), the rate by followers is 4.17% and the engagement rate by reach is 9.62%. The second one almost always comes out higher, because you divide by fewer people.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram and TikTok?

The Rival IQ 2026 benchmark report uses 2025 data. Its brand median is 0.30% on Instagram and 2.01% on TikTok, per post and by follower. It changes a lot by industry:

IndustryInstagramTikTok
Higher education1.51%5.26%
Sports1.10%2.64%
Pharma & healthcare0.61%4.63%
Media0.29%3.02%
Tech0.24%0.81%
Food0.20%1.41%
Fashion0.13%1.13%
Beauty0.08%0.46%

These are brand medians, not creators, and they’re by follower. Compare them with your rate by followers, never with your rate by reach. The calculator does that for you once you pick an industry.

YouTube and Facebook engagement rate calculator: how to adapt it

The rate by followers works on any network: interactions ÷ followers × 100. For YouTube or Facebook, pick Instagram in the calculator, enter the post’s interactions and your subscribers or page followers, and read only the rate by followers. Skip the industry comparison, because it uses Instagram medians.

These are the brand medians per follower from the Rival IQ 2026 benchmark report, with 2025 data:

PlatformMedian engagement
TikTok2.01%
Instagram0.30%
YouTube0.21%
X0.03%

It’s the first year YouTube appears in the report, so read it as a rough guide. The text gives no Facebook figure, so measure your page against its own last 10 posts. A made-up example: a channel with 20,000 subscribers whose latest video gets 220 likes, comments and shares scores 1.1%, well above that median.

LinkedIn engagement rate: the formula and a benchmark by format

LinkedIn rates are usually calculated by impressions, not followers: (reactions + comments + shares) ÷ impressions × 100. In the calculator, enter reactions as likes, add comments and shares, fill in your followers, type the post’s impressions in the reach field and read the rate by reach.

Socialinsider’s LinkedIn benchmark (company pages, measured by impressions) puts the overall average at 5.20%. These are its 2025 averages by format:

FormatAverage engagement
Native document7.00%
Multi-image6.45%
Video6.00%
Image5.30%
Text4.50%
Poll4.20%
Link3.25%

A made-up example: a post with 6,000 impressions, 240 reactions, 30 comments and 15 shares scores 4.75%, a bit under the average. Never put it next to the by-follower medians above. Different denominator, different game.

How businesses use engagement rate

  • Picking an influencer. Run the numbers on your three candidates using their latest posts. A huge account with a rate far below its industry may have lots of followers who never see anything.
  • Choosing formats. Compare carousels, Reels and photos by reach: it tells you what lands with people who already see it.
  • Monthly reporting. Add up the month’s posts and log the average rate. If followers grow and the rate drops, review what you post; our guide on how to get more followers on Instagram helps there.

Frequently asked questions about engagement rate

Is a 1% engagement rate good?

On Instagram, a 1% rate by followers is above the 0.30% median for brands in Rival IQ’s 2026 report, so for a business account it’s solid. On TikTok, where the brand median is 2.01%, 1% is below the pack. Context matters: a 1% rate by reach would be weak on either platform, because reach-based rates run much higher. Always check which formula a number uses before you judge it.

Is a 12% engagement rate good?

It’s very high, so check how it was calculated before celebrating. By reach or by views, 12% can happen on a post that landed with the right people. By followers, 12% is far above typical brand medians and usually comes from a small, close-knit audience, a giveaway or a post that went viral. If it holds across your last 9 to 12 regular posts, it’s real.

What’s my IG engagement rate?

Open Instagram’s professional dashboard, tap a post and view its insights: you’ll see likes, comments, shares, saves and accounts reached. Enter those numbers and your follower count in the calculator above. For your account’s rate rather than a single post’s, add up the interactions of your last 9 to 12 posts, type that total and set the number of posts. You get the average per post.

How is TikTok engagement rate calculated?

The same way as Instagram, with two differences. TikTok shows views on every video, so most creators calculate the rate by views: likes, comments, shares and saves divided by views, times 100. And saves (favorites) are public on TikTok, so you can include them when you compare yourself with other accounts. To compare with brand benchmarks, which are by follower, use the rate by followers instead.
