Shadowban: How to Tell If You’re Shadowbanned and How to Fix It

What Instagram, TikTok and X say in writing, the exact taps to check your account, how to measure a reach drop against your own numbers and the viral fixes with no proof behind them.

A shadowban is when a platform quietly limits who sees your account or posts without banning you. Instagram doesn't use the word, but it admits it can stop recommending your account to non-followers, and it tells you in Account Status, where you can also appeal.

We built this from Instagram, TikTok and X's official help pages, read in late October 2026, plus real US search data and what ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini answer. Two of the three AIs repeated timelines and tricks that appear on no official page.

You'll learn what it really is, how to check in two minutes, how to appeal and how to stop depending on one algorithm. More growth guides live in our social media section.

Shadowban meaning: what it is (and what Instagram calls it)

The shadowban meaning is simple: a platform cuts the reach of an account or its posts without notifying the user. The content stays up and followers can still see it, but it stops being shown to people who don't follow you. Instagram calls this not being eligible for recommendations; TikTok and X talk about ineligible content or limited visibility.

If you searched what is shadowban because your numbers dropped, here's what it isn't:

  • It isn't a ban or a suspension. If you can't post, comment or follow, that's a feature restriction, and Account Status names it.
  • It isn't every reach drop. Reach moves with timing, topic and what else is posted that day. One slow week isn't a penalty.
  • It isn't “Instagram hiding you so you'll buy ads.” Instagram denies it in writing, and nobody has shown proof otherwise.

Am I shadowbanned? Check your Instagram account status

To answer “am I shadowbanned,” open your Instagram account status: it's the only screen where Instagram tells you whether it's limiting your recommendations.

The path is in Instagram's Help Center. Tap your profile picture at the bottom right, then the menu at the top right. Under “More info and support,” tap Account Status. On desktop: More, Settings, Account Status.

You'll see removed content, features you can't use and a way to request a review. Professional accounts also see whether their content meets the Community Standards and the Recommendations Guidelines. That's the closest thing to a shadowban on Instagram that the company admits.

What content won't Instagram recommend?

Under its Recommendations Guidelines, Instagram doesn't recommend the following to non-followers, even when it's allowed:

  • Sensitive content: violence, sexually suggestive posts, regulated products, weight loss or cosmetic surgery.
  • Low-quality content: posts reused from elsewhere with minor edits, long captions unrelated to the post and coordinated comment networks.
  • False information, as rated by fact-checkers.
  • Accounts with recent violations, that buy likes or that post photorealistic AI people without the AI label.

Notice what's missing: the guidelines say nothing about hashtags.

What happens if your account isn't eligible?

Instagram stops recommending any of your content in Reels, Feed, Explore, Search and Suggested Accounts to people who don't follow you. Your followers still see you. And being eligible doesn't guarantee recommendations: it only means you're in the running.

Shadowban checker tools don't work: measure the drop instead

A shadowban checker can't see your Account Status, so the reliable test is that screen plus your numbers compared with your own history.

Online checkers only look at public signals, such as whether a post shows up under a hashtag. The classic “ask a friend to search your hashtag” trick proves nothing either: Instagram ranks every search for every person.

Why are my Instagram views so low?

Find out with your own data. In your professional dashboard, write down reach, interactions and the share of non-followers reached for your last 10 posts and the 10 before. Work out engagement by reach for each block in our engagement rate calculator.

Example: if your last 10 Reels averaged 1,200 reach and 60 interactions (5%) and the previous 10 averaged 3,000 and 150 (also 5%), the people who see you like you just as much. Fewer people are being shown your posts: check Account Status first.

How to fix shadowban on Instagram, step by step

To fix a shadowban on Instagram, correct or appeal whatever Account Status flags, then stop doing what the Recommendations Guidelines penalize.

  1. Open Account Status

Profile, Menu and, under “More info and support,” Account Status. Take a dated screenshot.

  2. Read what's flagged and why

Removed content, restricted features or content that doesn't meet the Recommendations Guidelines. Each notice names the post.

  3. Edit, remove or appeal

If they're right, edit or remove the post. If not, tap “Disagree with decision” so the team reviews it again.

  4. Cut what hurts recommendations

No reposted content that adds nothing, no comment pods and no AI people without the label.

  5. Measure against your history

Repeat the 10-post comparison two or three weeks later in the engagement rate calculator.

  6. Move your audience to a channel you own

Put a page with your site, newsletter or SMS sign-up in your link in bio. Nobody's algorithm can throttle what you own.

TikTok shadowban: how to know and how to get unshadowbanned

A TikTok shadowban has an official name: a video can be “ineligible for the For You feed,” and TikTok says so in the video's analytics.

To learn how to know if you are shadowbanned on TikTok, follow TikTok Support. First turn on analytics: Profile, Menu, TikTok Studio, then “Get started” and “Turn on.” Then, on the video, go to More insights or More options, then Analytics. If it's ineligible, you'll see the notice, the reason and an Appeal button. If the appeal is approved, the video becomes eligible again.

That's how to get unshadowbanned on TikTok: appeal what's wrong and fix what isn't. Your account status sums up the last 90 days of violations in four levels: Healthy, Fair, Severe or Banned. TikTok's Community Guidelines add a useful note: low views don't necessarily mean you broke a rule.

Does deleting the video remove a TikTok shadowban?

No. TikTok says deleting the violating video doesn't remove the strike: it expires after 90 days. Appeal if you disagree and, meanwhile, post when your audience is online; your best time to post on TikTok is in your own analytics.

Shadowbans on X, Facebook, YouTube and Reddit

X admits to limiting visibility, Meta reduces distribution of low-quality posts on Facebook, and Reddit flags spam accounts; YouTube hasn't published anything on the term.

  • X: a limited post is removed from search, trends and the For you and Following timelines and only shows on your profile. Since April 2023 X labels it, and you can appeal. The test to check it is right below.
  • Facebook: Meta's Transparency Center says it reduces distribution of low-quality content that breaks no rules, such as clickbait and engagement bait. Where to look comes further down.
  • YouTube: we found no official YouTube page about shadowbans. If views drop, check retention and click-through rate in YouTube Studio first.
  • Reddit: it doesn't say shadowban; it says an account has been flagged for spam or inauthentic activity.

Twitter shadowban test: how to check your X account

No Twitter shadowban test gives an official verdict, because X has no screen that says “you're limited.” You can still run a home-made test with a second account that doesn't follow you:

  1. Search for your handle on X. If your profile doesn't show up, even in the suggestions, something is limiting search.
  2. Search from:yourhandle and look at the latest results. If posts you can see on your profile are missing, they aren't in search.
  3. Open someone else's thread where you replied. If your replies don't show, they're being hidden.

Free online tests do something similar: they only look at public signals. Treat them as a hint, not a verdict, because X doesn't endorse them.

There's one new option. Engadget reported in August 2026 that X began testing an “Under the hood” page (x.com/i/under_the_hood) with a small group of users. It shows last month's count of labels that limit the visibility of your account and posts. For now it doesn't use the word shadowban and doesn't say which post got which label.

If something fails, appeal the label and delete whatever breaks the rules. Then compare impressions for your last 10 posts against the 10 before, as you would on Instagram.

Facebook shadowban: how to tell if Meta is limiting your Page

Facebook doesn't use the word either, but it does admit to cutting distribution. In its July 2025 announcement on unoriginal content, Meta said accounts that repeatedly reuse other people's videos, photos or text lose access to monetization for a period and get reduced distribution on everything they share. When its systems detect duplicate videos, they reduce distribution of the copies.

To check, open the main menu of your professional Page or profile and go to Support home. Meta says that's where you can see whether you risk penalties to recommendations or monetization. Meta's Transparency Center adds that Page admins can see their Page's violations and restrictions in Page Quality. Meta also points to the professional dashboard, where per-post insights help explain distribution problems.

If nothing shows up, it isn't a penalty. Compare reach for your last 10 posts with the 10 before, then check whether you're recycling other people's content, clickbait or engagement bait.

Copy-paste prompts

Act as a social media analyst. Here are the stats for my last 20 Instagram posts: [paste date, format, reach, non-follower reach and interactions for each]. Split them into two blocks of 10 and work out engagement by reach and the non-follower share for each block. Tell me whether the pattern looks more like limited recommendations or content that's landing less. Don't give timelines or tricks that aren't in Instagram's official help.

Frequently asked questions about shadowbans

Does Instagram shadowban AI content?

Not AI content as such, but unlabeled AI people, yes. Instagram's Recommendations Guidelines say accounts that post photorealistic AI-generated people without the AI label may not be recommended to non-followers. AI content that's labeled isn't on that list. If you use AI images or video with realistic people, add the AI label when you post, and keep the same rules as any other content: original work, captions that match the post and no engagement bait.

Can you get shadowbanned on Instagram for posting too much?

Instagram's Recommendations Guidelines don't set a daily post limit or say that posting often hurts you. What they do name is low-quality content: posts reused from elsewhere with minor edits, long unrelated captions and coordinated networks that inflate comments. Posting a lot is only a problem if hitting that pace means doing exactly those things. Three original posts a week will serve you better than ten recycled ones.

Can a private Instagram account be shadowbanned?

Not in the way Instagram admits to. Recommendation eligibility only applies to public accounts, because a private account isn't recommended to people who don't follow it anyway. If your account is private and followers see less of you, look at their activity, your posting times and your formats. A private account can still have content removed or features restricted, though, and that shows up in Account Status like on any other account.

How long does a shadowban last?

There's no official timeline for Instagram: the 48 hours, 14 days or one month you'll read online don't come from any Instagram page. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, wrote in 2023 that accounts that repeatedly post violating content lose recommendation eligibility for a period of time, without giving a number. TikTok is more precise: strikes expire after 90 days. The fastest route is to check Account Status and appeal if you disagree.

Does Instagram actually shadowban accounts?

It limits recommendations, it just doesn't call it a shadowban. Adam Mosseri wrote in 2023 that there's no shared definition of the term and that Instagram doesn't suppress content to make people buy ads. What Instagram does admit is that an account or a post can stop being recommended to non-followers, and since December 2022 it shows professional accounts whether that's happening in Account Status, with a way to appeal.

Can I check if I'm shadowbanned with a personal account?

Only partly. A personal account shows removed content and restricted features in Account Status, but recommendation eligibility is only shown to professional accounts. Switching to a free creator or business account from your settings unlocks it. Be careful with the opposite advice, switching to a personal account to reset a shadowban: it isn't in any Instagram documentation, and it hides the one official diagnosis you have.
